What happens when you make layer graham cracker and butter, chocolate, walnuts, sweetened condensed milk, and coconut? Magic Bars. Trust me they really are magic!
Last week I had a friend ask me how we manage to eat so healthy all the time and if we ever have not so good for you treats. Of my friends, this recipe is a direct answer to that questions. So insanely good but maybe not so much a health food.
This is my stance on sweets and unhealthy food: I have absolutely no problem indulging in treats but when at all possible, I to make them at home. My reasoning is, if I’m going to feed my family a big sweet treat or unhealthy junky, why not try to make it myself and use actual real ingredients instead of mystery ones.
Obviously this doesn’t work all the time (looking at you donuts), but it’s at least my goal most of the time.
So back to the question. Yes we eat treats. We love treats. And these Magic Bars are a big treat!
Magic Bars, 6 layer bars or Million Dollar Bars! People call them differently but no matter what you decide to call them… they are freaken delicious!
Here is the breakdown:
- coconut
- chocolate chips
- sweetened condensed milk
- graham crackers
- walnuts
- butter
Count them. SIX. A graham cracker and butter crust followed by layers of the rest of the ingredients. And the result is heavenly. A sweet, sticky, gooey, chocolaty, coco-nutty bar of goodness.
A perfect dessert for pretty much any occasion. Going camping, a BBQ, last minute dinner party, a date night treat, a treat for your kids or a friendly gift for your neighbor.
Tonight for example we made a big veggie loaded Cobb salad along with these bars as dessert. Balance. That’s what it’s all about. Life is sweeter with dessert, so why skip it.
20 bars
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter
- 15 full graham crackers (about 2 cups)
- 2 cups chocolate chips
- 1 cup shredded sweetened coconut
- 1 cup walnuts, chopped
- 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Place graham crackers in food processor and pulse until crackers are a crumb consistency. Melt butter and mix well with the graham cracker crumbs in a bowl. Spread the crumbs onto a 9x13 inch baking dish and then press into an even layer to cover the pan with your finger.
- Spread chocolate chips evenly over graham cracker crust followed by coconut and walnuts. Drizzle sweetened condensed milk evenly over top.
- Bake until lightly golden, about 25 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack then cut into bars. Store in an airtight container in the fridge.
Notes
Bars will keep in the fridge for 7 days! They will softened if left in a warm place. So I like keeping them in the fridge and then setting them out at room temp about 20 minutes before we want to eat them. These bars freeze great too! You can swap butterscotch chips for the chocolate chips if you want a different totally awesome variation.
