Once every month, we hop in the car and head to Costco for our Costco Favorites! These items are of great quality, great value and extra great in bulk!
A year and a half ago, I was adamant that I did not need a Costco membership. A family of 2 adults and a toddler, I mean how much do we really eat? My parents had become members and were constantly raving about certain sale items that were great quality and value.
Well my friends, I have to say, as much as I still don’t love big bulk shopping, it totally does make sense to bulk shop for some things. And as a growing family of 4 now with 4 eaters, we really do go through a good amount of food around here.
Yes in a perfect world I would love to walk to the fresh local market a few blocks from my mythical European town house and shop daily for necessary ingredients, but 1. I don’t live in a cute European city townhouse 2. Who has the time to shop for ingredients every single day, and work, and care for children?
Instead my grocery life revolves around the summer farmer’s market, my favorite local grocery store, Costco and Trader Joe’s for goodies. Seems like a lot but since it’s not every week, it totally works for us.
The reason I was always skeptical about big bulk shopping is because it takes up a lot of space in your home and I feel like it can promote waste. Because really, some of the quantities are insane!
However it has been about a year since we joined and I can truly say that we love certain Costco items. They are a great value and quality. We also make a point to only buy things we KNOW we are going to use and finish. No wasting.
Costco for me is a once a month grocery trip. Or sometimes 2x a month if we are planning a big party.
These are the Costco things we are currently LOVING:
Organic all-purpose flour
With the amount of baking I do, buying 10 lbs of flour is really efficient! Great flour at a great price!
Hummus
A favorite purchase for busy months. Basically this large tub of local hummus (Holy Land Hummus) becomes my quick lunch with veggies during a busy week.
La Croix variety pack (3 flavors)
Our fizzy fav since we don’t drink soda.
Ezekiel bread
This is my favorite healthy toast bread and my little Beany loves it too. Buying this bread in bulk (2 loaves) is great since it needs to be stored in the freezer anyway!
Frozen fruit
With our daily family smoothies and a toddler who loves to snack on frozen fruit, we go through frozen fruit like crazy. Costco has the best organic frozen fruit options I have found thus far, from mango to pineapple to berries and cherries. They have it all!
POM Wonderful
This is a steal at Costco. A large bottle is about half of the price to those sold in grocery stores.
Flax meal, chia seeds, hemp hearts
I add these power add-ins to smoothies and baked goods all the time.
Organic berries
My kids are berry monsters. These large containers of berries are demolished at my house.
Organic milk and CHEESE
Now that my Bean is off formula and drinking cow’s milk, we go through a lot of milk! I love that the milk is organic and comes in ½ gallon containers. Cheese cheese cheese! We eat a lot of cheese! The big Tillamook cheddar block is such a steal plus it’s delicious!
Cage-free eggs
An every-Costco trip staple. We go through a lot of eggs between my egg loving kids and lots of baking.
Organic Quinoa
This is the grain we eat the most of, so the 4.5lbs Kirkland quinoa is ideal for us.
Maple Syrup and local honey
Another staple. Great tasting maple syrup and local honey. Winner!
Yogurt
Another every trip staple because we go through so much Greek yogurt! Plus they sell the big plain Faye, my favorite! And for the toddler, her favorite “treat” are the organic Stonyfield Squeezers frozen!
Smoked Salmon
A lazy dinner treat for us! We love buying smoked salmon every once in a while along with fresh bagels from St.Paul Bagelry. Then some cream cheese and cucumbers, and call it dinner.
Crackers and granola bars
I try really hard to buy very little packaged snacks. These are 2 of our main ones: Multi-grain crackers for the kiddos, and Nature Valley crunchy bars for travel. These are great bulk purchases because we go through the crackers very quickly and the granola bars last forever!
Household stuff
Unbeatable prices for stuff we go through very quickly as a family of 4.
- Toilet paper
- Dishwasher pods and Dish soap
- Laundry detergent
And last but not least…. Vanilla Froyo at the Costco cafe. Toddler approves!
