Returning from vacation can be hard, but focusing on a few immediate things makes the transition easier. Let’s talk Family Travel: 5 Things to Focus on When You Get Home from Vacation.
Back from a long vacation with your family, you are exhausted from a long travel day, where do you even start? Here are the 5 simple things we do after every vacation.
We are back after a long wonderful vacation with our girls. And although our time away was amazing and memorable, it’s nice to be home.
Getting back from after a long time away is daunting, no doubt. Between the unpacking, cranky kids, laundry, empty fridge, work… yikes! But after several trips with our littles, we have learned to first focus on a few things right away, then worry about the rest later.
DAY 1
1. Recover
This is the number one priority after a long trip, especially when the kids fly with us. Travel takes a toll on your body and mind, so the first and most important thing we focus on is rest.
Play, eat, bath, sleep. That’s the focus. Since we normally take midday flights returning home, we have a few hours before the girls’ bedtimes to unwind and recover.
2. Eat Simply
After a long vacation, it feels good to get home, eat real food and not have to leave again. Before every long vacation I leave a few key things for our return: non-perishable snacks, eggs, bread, PB and jelly, tortillas, pasta, frozen fruit and veggies, freezer meals like naan, soups, chili or pasta sauce.
Upon our return, we opt for a simple easy dinner like, fruit smoothies with PB & J, quesadillas, eggs and toast, frittata and bread, cacio e pepe pasta, or a freezer meal.

DAY 2
3. Unpack
Next up, the dreaded unpacking. I like to go threw all of the suitcases and separate clean vs dirty laundry. Then I make a huge pile of the dirty clothes and start running loads. Then the clean is folded and sorted in laundry baskets, to be brought upstairs and put away in everyone’s rooms.
My goal is to always unpack everything and finish laundry the day after we arrive to get it over with, keep a clutter-free house and move on from the trip.
4. Check Statements
While the laundry is running and the girls are chasing each other around the house, I like to check all our statements. With travel, especially international travel, it’s always good to double check your purchases, and make sure there are no fraudulent transactions.
Although a little tedious, this takes like 10 minutes and is so worth it! If there is a transaction I do not recognize, the credit card company can normally help to setting the issue.
5. Download Photos
Camera or phone, this task is important for a few reasons. It’s an easy one to forget to do, the photos take up space on your devices, and it ensures you will not lose them. Also for me, it’s a fun way to relive my vacation for a few minutes.
Once these 5 tasks are taken care of, we work on
