Beautiful Fall is here. The leaves are quickly turning, and as winter approaches it’s a great time to enjoy being outside with these 10 Outdoor Fall Family Activities.
As winter approaches, the main thing on my mind is getting the kids outside! Fall is such a gift to the sense i think. The colors, the cool chill, the smells, so why not soak it all up before the long cold days come.
In my finally I have one kid who LOVES being outside and another who requires a little coercing. So that means we get creative with outdoor adventures. But I find that changing up the usual stroll to the playground, actually makes it fun for all of us!
1. Nature Scavenger Hunt
A simple way to get young kids outside and exploring is through a little scavenger hunt. My 4 year old is not always in the mood to go outside unless we are going to the park, but is totally up for scavenger hunts! Simply choose items that you think you will see on your walk; different color leaves, sticks, flowers, squirrels, pine cones, acorns etc; and have your littles search for them and then cross it on off their sheet! Who can fill their sheet up first!?
2. Nature walk and Hot Cocoa
I don’t know about yours but mine are very easily motivated by hot cocoa. A fun simple family activity is having the kids make hot cocoa, then we pack up the travel mugs and head out for a chilli walk. Now that kids are a touch older they walk some, and then when they get tired, they cuddle in the stroller with a big blanket and their warm bev.
3. Bonfire and S’mores
As it is darker earlier now, it’s easier to have bonfires with the littles. Bring chairs, flashlights, and all the necessary s’mores equipment before bedtime!
4. Flash Light Walk
A simple flashlight or headlamp can make a nature walk so much more fun. And especially when it starts getting dark earlier in the day, flashlight walks are a fun post dinner idea.
5. Leaf Play
As the leaves continue to pile up your yard, get a rack and make some not-so-perfect leaf piles. Let the kids play in them! Grab a chair, sit back and let them play for a while.
6. Puddle Jumping
With all the rain lately, puddle jumping is fun and oh so darn cute. All they need are rain boots let them splash themselves happy!
7. Reading Picnic
A crate filled with books, a few cozy blankets and maybe some popcorn make for a fabulous activities with the kiddos. We take turns picking books and reading outside as the sunsets.
8. “City” Walk
Living in a suburb we don’t really have a lot of places/businesses to walk to. So one of my favorite things to do with the girls is pick a coffee shop, restaurant, book store or bakery, and park several blocks away. For them it’s an adventure to walk, window shop and also learn how to safely use crosswalks.
9. Pumpkin Patch
Pumpkin picking season is quite short, so get your family out there picking some good pumpkins! Paint some, carve others, roast those seeds.
10. Apple Orchard
Can’t get a Fall without hitting up an apple orchard. This year, I am trying to avoid the big commercial ones and opting for smaller run operations that still have great apples and give the kids a chance to explore the beauty of the orchard. Plus with endless Apple recipes, the skies the limit.
