‘Tis apple season and nothing helps us get into the fall spirit like this insanely delicious Slow Cooker Cinnamon Apple Butter.
[Recipe Updated 10/8/19, orginally posted 10/2/18]: Both kids are sick, so no therapy today. This literally NEVER HAPPENS! My mission: enjoy the house to ourselves, relax with the girls and use up my orchard apples for some spiced apple butter.
I make this recipe usually 2-3x a year during the fall/winter months. It’s one of my favorite little treats to share with friends and we like to store extra jar in the freezer for cozy winter weekends.
Are my 2 girlies the only kids that do not like apple sauce? Seriously? Anyone else’s kid’s not like apple sauce?
Normally I wouldn’t care, but in the fall it’s a bit of a travesty! I love making homemade apple sauce in the fall, but with my kid’s not really into it any more, I’ve had to find other ways show my apple love. MY GIRLS OFFICIALLY LIKE APPLESAUCE. I don’t really know what happened. One day they didn’t like it, the next they were asking for it! Woohoo!
One thing my kids do like, is bread. Good bread. And what is better than bread with homemade cinnamon butter? Not much if you ask me!
Much like my yummy pumpkin butter recipe, this cinnamon apple butter recipe is quite easy and made in the slow cooker. The main work involved is peeling and chopping the apples. Then it’s just a waiting game. The best is doing this over night.
Wake up to your house smelling like an orchard. Awwww heavenly!
Our favorite apple butter experience goes like this…
I throw the peeled apples in the slow cooker on a Friday night along with no-knead bread. Then in the morning, while the bread bakes in the oven, I blitz the apple butter in the blender. Then the rest of the morning is all about coffee, bread with apple butter, PJs, and cute little messy sticky faces and fingers. The perfect fall family morning in my opinions.
So friends, if you have a bunch of apples, do yourself a favor and make some apple butter. For you, for a friend or a neighbor 😀 They will love you!
Yields About 32oz or 4 (8oz) mason jars
Ingredients
- 2-3 lbs apples, peeled, cored and finely chopped (I always add 1 Granny Smith)
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Combine sugars, cinnamon, cloves and salt in a large bowl. Pour in the peeled, cored, chopped apples and mix well.
- Pour everything in slow cooker cover. Cook on low for 9-11 hours or until thickened and dark brown. I love doing this on a slow weekend when I’m at home all day, or overnight.
- Stir occasionally.
- Uncover and cook on low for 1 hour longer.
- If desired, whisk until smooth or blend for a smooth texture. Store in airtight containers with lid.
Notes
Refrigerated, apple butter will last a few weeks. Apple butter can be frozen in freezer friendly jars leaving 1/2-inch head space. This also makes a great food gift for friends, new parents, or neighbors.
