Friday already!? At 10 pm last night I realized “ahhh tomorrow is Friday!” Yep somehow I’ve been a day behind all week. Skijoring, Super Bowl, packing, traveling, baby shenanigans… it has been a random 7 days.
Until moving to Minnesota, I had never even heard of Skijoring. 5 years ago I would have thought it was a type of cheese or snorkeling. Now I know, it’s a super rad sport where a person is pulled on skis by a dog (or apparently sometimes a horse according to Wikipedia). This is definitely a spectator’s sport. Dogs pulling humans on skis = free entertainment.
I first witnessed this sweet sport 3 years ago at the Minneapolis Loppet event which takes place on one of our frozen lakes. Again prior to moving here, I would have not really understood this whole set up. Dogs of all shapes, sizes and colors gather, all excited and ready for the big race. Their owners with their vibrant ski suits (even some tutus) have their harnesses strapped on and ready to go.
When the race starts all the dogs take off! There are the first 10 or so that are clearly well trained and focused on the race. Next up, the social dogs who take off but then quickly decide to run into their fellow competitors or sniff the crowd or run in a different direction to the course. And of course, the outliers. This year there was a 20 lbs. Bichon Frise “pulling” a 200 lbs. man. Or one of my favorites was a 150 lbs. German Shepard pulling a 120 lbs. tiny woman. I’m telling you it’s a fun time. Skijoring watching was our Saturday and boy was it a good one.
Is anyone else super excited for Zoolander 2? I know I know, the previews get old. But the movie actually looks like it will be good. Plus who can resist Derek, Hansel and Mugatu together again!
Last but not least Valentine’s Day. I will admit I am a super cheesy date loving nerd who enjoys finding any excuse for a romantic date night, but I do not buy into the whole chocolate, pink heart, gift giving thing. To me Valentine ’s Day is just a little nudge to remind people to do something fun and thoughtful for your significant other or best friend. An excuse to make a fun dinner, go out for a good meal, spend time with loved ones or simply treat yo’self to something nice.
So whatever your plans are this weekend, enjoy them. Screw the whole “gift giving thing.” Do something nice for someone special in your life, even if that person is you.
