New Years is right around the corner! Time for a cocktail. And this year I am going with a glamorous cocktail that is simple to make, easy to drink and made of regular inexpensive ingredients without sacrificing that New Years pizzazz.
Scofflaw. Ever heard of it? Very cool and appropriately named after the term given to those who sipped spirits throughout Prohibition. My bro and sis-in-law prepared this ruby red drink earlier this month and I fell in love. The hubs and I have made it pretty much all December long and have tweaked the recipe to make it just right. Not too sweet, not too tart, not too wimpy, and not too boozy.
It has been a whirlwind year in our house and I am thankful for every fabulous moment. Cheers and here’s to an exhilarating 2016 🙂
Happy New Year! See you guys in 2016 🙂
Scofflaw
Makes 2 cocktails; double or triple to make more.
Notes: The hubs is the mixologist master bartender at our house. His favorite rye whiskey is Rittenhouse or for a budget bourbon Cabin Still. As for the vermouth, a solid choice is Dolin Dry.
- 2 1/2 ounces rye whiskey or bourbon*
- 2 ounce dry vermouth*
- 1 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 ounce grenadine* (store-bought or homemade)
- 3 dashes orange bitters
Combine all ingredients with ice and shake well. Strain into a cocktail glasses and garnish with 3 drops of bitters.
Homemade Grenadine
Makes 1 1/2 cups
- 1 cup pomegranate juice, no sugar added (POM Wonderful)
- 2/3 cup sugar
Heat pomegranate juice in a small saucepan over medium heat until a few small bubbles have formed around the edge of the pan, about 5 minutes. (Do not boil.) Remove from heat.
Add sugar and stir until dissolved, about 5 minutes. Let the syrup cool to room temperature. Transfer to a airtight container (mason jars work great) and refrigerate for up to 1 month. To make the grenadine last even longer, add a tablespoon of vodka.
Cheers
