The Negroni has a special place in my heart. It is the ruby-red bittersweet Italian cocktail that the hubs and I discovered last fall before we found out we were pregnant.
I remember the first time we both tried a negroni. It was after a fabulous dinner at Butcher and the Boar in downtown Minneapolis. By the looks of it, I expected sweet and fruity. But trust me it was NOT either one of those things.
The first taste completely took us by surprise. Instead of sweet, it was bittersweet and instead of fruity it had wild undertones of herby gin, spices and bitter orange. So after getting over that first unexpected sip and truly savoring the different flavors, the hubs and I fell head over heels for this Italian concoction.
I will never forget finding out we were pregnant! We were ecstatic! Yes we had been trying but still it finally happened. No more negronis for me! And of course the next day, as we still processed the little person and big changes coming into our lives, the hubs made himself a negroni after dinner.
Clearly though, he forgot I could not drink since he made a double! Ha! So being the good husband that he is, he made the sacrifice and drank one negroni for him and one negroni for me. I like to think of this night as our kickoff to 9 months of pregnancy and a lifetime with our little Poppy seed. And even though I haven’t had a full negroni cocktail since finding out I was pregnant (over a year now), this will always be a sentimental drink.
Negroni Cocktail
Serves: 2. Easy to remember 1:1:1 ratio of all 3 ingredients so feel free to double. ❤️ Valentine’s Day Worthy ❤️
Mature, classic and slow sipping, this bittersweet ruby gem is an easy romantic night-cap or post Valentine’s Day dinner drink.
Notes: Use your favorite gin. We love locally crafted Prairie Organic Gin. As for the sweet vermouth, the hub’s #1 favorite is Antica Formula Sweet Vermouth” but Cocchi Aperitivo Americano Rosa is a good cheaper substitute. Lastly, the Campari is what makes this drink. Just visit your local liquor store and ask for it.
- 2 ounces gin
- 2 ounces Campari (Italian bitter-sweet liqueur)
- 2 ounces sweet vermouth
In a mixing glass, pour the gin, Campari and sweet vermouth. Stir. Pour over 2 glasses with ice (preferably 2 large ice cubes).
Sip and drink responsibly.
