Travel, germs and the oh-so-powerful jinx gave me a cold. Earlier last week I was just telling someone how the baby and I were feeling healthy and had not been sick for a while. And then of course we both got sick the next day. I think it’s the universe’s way of playing a funny joke on me. Touché Universe… touché.
Being sick now is very different to being sick in the past. Before, I would simply worry about having enough energy to make it into work, or perhaps enough energy to workout or being able to keep plans with friends. I use to simply come home from work and crash on the couch while the hubs was extra sweet and offered to make or pick up soup for me. After a few days of rest and little effort, the cold would disappear.
Now a cold means much more. First I don’t want to get baby Poppy sick. However in this instant we are both sick… so no worries there. Secondly and most importantly, I want to be able to take care of her. No matter how crummy I am feeling, I need to be there for her and perform all my mommy duties. But being human and feeling like crap is not fun.
My most effective strategy to kick colds is simple and effective. Ginger Lemon Tea Cold Remedy and sleep. Revolutionary, it is not, but I swear, this works in the course of 2-3 days!
Sleep is an obvious one. But for those with kids, sleep is not always easy. This time with a sick baby, I selfishly stole some nap time cuddles with her. I finally took the “sleep while the baby sleeps” advice seriously. And it paid off!
The next part to my recovery was thanks to this killer Ginger Lemon Tea concoction. I swear by this stuff. Highly recommended by my mom, family and the internet, Ginger is the prime healer here. According to the ancient healing practice of Ayurveda (world’s oldest holistic whole-body healing systems) and traditional Chinese medicine, ginger is a powerful immune booster, warming the body and ridding the lungs and sinuses of toxins. Plus Ginger’s natural spiciness can help clear congestion. And it actually tastes rather nice.
This is a super simple all natural home remedy that really works! It warms my inside up when I’m sick, soothes a sore throat and helps to fight a pesky cold.
This time around, I had about 7 good cups of this stuff over the course of 3 days plus good sleep and the cold was gone! Congestion is still lingering but my energy has returned and I am back to my normal self. Sadly little Poppy is still a little sick… too bad she can’t have this miraculous tea!
Ginger Lemon Tea Cold Remedy {works for Flu season too!}
Serves 1. I like to double or triple this and store it in the fridge. Reheat before drinking.
- 1 cup water
- 1 inch piece ginger root, peeled and roughly chopped
- 1/2 whole organic lemon
- 1 teaspoon honey or more to taste
In a small pot, bring the water, ginger, and lemon juice to a boil over medium-high heat. Turn off the heat.
Put the lid on it and let it steep for 10-15 minutes.
Strain the mixtures into a mug and add honey to taste. Stir and sip up all the healing goodness.
This recipe is not from a particular source. Just a known simple remedy. I got this one from my mom.
