October is apple season in Minnesota which means applesauce! This time I’m excited to share a twist on an old classic with my Cinnamon Carrot Applesauce.
[Recipe Updated 10/2/19, original 10/24/17]:Having recently loaded up on apples at the orchard, applesauce was definitely on the menu! I love this recipe because it’s a really easy way to get more carrots our diet. Plus the carrots add extra dimension and sweetness to the applesauce.
Best part is, it’s just like my other favorite applesauce recipe Slow Cooker Cinnamon Applesauce which is cooked up in the slow cooker. Easy peasy!
My kids have been digging these [amazon text=refillable food pouches &asin=B01CC4P8XU] lately, making this a great car or to-go snack!
We are currently obsessed with apples at my house.
1. it’s apple season
2. it’s a perfect portable snack
3. it’s my tot’s and hub’s favorite fruit
Personally I love the fact that my tot can eat an apple whole with her 2 little hands without the need for to slice it up! Ha! Easiest snack ever!
We are also really into apples because it’s the best time to get our favorite local variety… Honey Crisp! A perfect blend of crisp, sweet and slightly tart. Seriously the best apple in my opinion.
But with the amount of apples we have had lately, it was time to change things up. So I decided to cook up some warm, comforting and delicious applesauce.
Every fall during apple season, I make several batches of my homemade Slow Cooker Cinnamon Applesauce. But this year, I’ve added a fun healthy twist… CARROTS!
Yep, I figure why not add a little extra nutrition to an already healthy snack. Adding carrots provides a slight sweetness and color change to the applesauce, but that’s about it. Definitely not an overpowering carrot flavor!
If you like sweeter apple sauce, adding 3 tablespoons of brown sugar is plenty!
I made a big batch of this recipe a week ago, kept a big jar for us to eat right now and froze the rest in little jars for later this winter. This applesauce is great in smoothies, yogurt and in baked goods.
Nothing like waking up on a cold winter morning to a slice of banana bread and a warm cup of homemade Cinnamon Carrot Applesauce 😀
